ARTIST STATEMENT
I am surrounded by the objects I've collected and have been passed on to me for safe keeping; they are like an archeological dig. Art is a way for me to explain my relationship to these bits and pieces which often turn up in my work as figurative metaphors.
The key to my work is the way I use negative spaces as transition points between forms. My pictures contain an element of surprise and though the forms are recognizable and clearly defined, yet there is a sense of layering and under painting just beneath the surface. I use color to define form and volume, line to suggest movement. Though I am primarily a painter, I work in printmaking as well as public art and photography as a means to communicate across cultural borders. I intend for my images to have a universal and timeless appeal.
I’ve been told that my photographs are often mistaken for paintings and my paintings and prints refer to my photographs.
